I used to think the term “Self Love” was for those who were destructive, to not only themselves but to others. For those individuals that were so deeply rooted with an inner conflict that they saw no other option than to literally try to destroy themselves, mentally or physically.. A problem so large, it wasn’t worth trying to solve.
You see my friends, Self Love is for every single person living in this world. It’s for every living and breathing soul. Self love is when you have the belief that you are valuable and worthy. That you recognize your needs are a priority and that you must put yourself first over pleasing others.
When you focus on Self Love, you focus on taking care of yourself. You set the tone for all relationships in your life on how you expect to be treated: with compassion, love and understanding.
Have you ever noticed when you take a break from something that is super frustrating, when you come back “refreshed”, you’re able to more easily solve the problem? Or maybe you realize the frustrating thing isn’t that big of a deal? It’s important to recognize that we are beautifully created inside and out and that we may need to take a break to show ourselves love and compassion.
I think about this all the time- how often do you compliment someone else in comparison to how often you compliment yourself? The words you say to yourself, “I can’t believe I did that, I am so stupid”, “I am so ugly”, “I hate this on my body”, would you change “I” to “you” and say that to someone else? Most likely not. We need to be kinder to ourselves and be more loving. Love is the greatest thing in the world and if we can begin to love ourselves more, we then have love at the foundation of all relationships in our lives. Love at the start of something creates more and more love.
The ways we show Self Love can be different for everyone. Some may want to pamper themselves while others need to set quality time aside to do the things they don’t normally get to. This could be watching a show and enjoying a glass of wine. This could be making zero exceptions and going for a walk at sunset every night. Whatever it may be, think about what it is that makes you feel calm, full and quite simply, happy. What makes you feel special and worthy? Find whatever that may be and make time for it because you are absolutely special and worth it. You are valuable.
I wanted to include some inspirational quotes I found on Pinterest and I have saved to my “Use your Words” board. I have always been a quote junkie and love doodling my favorites in a journal or reading through them at night! I typically share positive quotes daily on my instagram stories (be sure to follow me on instagram @brittanyanncourtney)!
